Greetings from China!

Under the current global economic context, university graduates are facing increasing pressure and competition in the job market, which is particularly the case for Chinese students graduating from UK or other overseas institutions. In order to prepare Chinese students for their future career development in China, the British Council China plans to organise three employability workshops in the UK from 20 November to 27 November 2009, at which Chinese students can get first-hand information and updates from HR professionals who represent major employers in China.

Please find below an itinerary of the workshops:

City Time Venue*
London 15:00 – 17:00, 21 November 2009 (Saturday) Westminster City Hall
Cardiff 19:00 – 21:00, 24 November 2009 (Tuesday) Cardiff University
Edinburgh 19:00 – 21:00, 27 November 2009 (Friday) University of Edinburgh
*Detailed venue information will be sent to registered students with the registration confirmation letters

This is the second time for the British Council China to organise such workshops in the UK and the first one, in February 2007, was warmly welcomed by Chinese students as well as many UK institutions. More than 300 Chinese students on average attended each of the ten workshop sessions back then. As we did previously, we will invite speakers from various backgrounds and with rich experience in human resource and graduate recruitment in China. The guest speakers will share their insights with students on career development and employability skills, especially needs and demands of current employers in China.

The workshops will be delivered in Chinese language only and will be open to all Chinese students free of charge. We will be most grateful if you, or your colleagues in charge of career services, could help disseminate the event information as attached (both Word and Adobe versions) to all Chinese students who are currently studying at your institution at your earliest convenience.

<<Invitation to Chinese students.doc>> <<Employability Workshop Invitation to Students.pdf>>

Please note that, due to limited number of workshop sessions and venue capacity, online registration will be required for any students that are interested in attending this event. Please advise your students to register at http://www.educationuk.cn/alumniuk/uktour/. Further event details can be found on this website.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to both Cardiff University and University of Edinburgh for hosting the sessions for Chinese students in Wales and Scotland.

Should you have any question about the workshops, please feel free to contact the project lead:

Zhang Meng, Education Marketing Manager, zhang.meng@britishcouncil.org.cn

Feng Ying, Education Marketing Officer, feng.ying@britishcouncil.org.cn

Thank you for your support. I hope the event will be a great opportunity to develop China-specific employability skills of your Chinese students.

Best regards,

Education Marketing Team

Study for UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport Analysys Mason was commissioned by the UK government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport to support and improve its understanding of the online, new media sector in the UK, focusing in particular on the drivers for and barriers to creative ambition and innovation in high-quality, professional new media content. The objective of the report was to provide a clear, evidence-based view on the drivers and barriers that exist in this emerging market, in order to help the department evaluate a range of potential policy options. The report was published alongside the final ‘Digital Britain’ report, and benefited from the input of 25 senior executives from some of the largest creative media companies in the UK.

Summary

To apply for a Research Fellowship you need to complete the online application.

The scheme of 1851 Research Fellowships is intended to give a few PhD level scientists or engineers of outstanding promise the opportunity for conducting research for a further period. Awarded for three years, they provide an exceptional opportunity for PhD graduates to pursue further research at the highest level. Approximately eight awards are made each year.

The Fellowships are open to candidates in any of the physical or biological sciences, in mathematics, in applied science, or in any branch of engineering. Candidates in science subjects should normally have recently obtained their PhD degree, or be in the final stages of their PhD studies. Those offering engineering do not have to be in possession of a PhD, but must be of at least PhD standard.

Applications from qualified engineering researchers are particularly encouraged. To this end the Royal Commission offers an additional fellowship to further strengthen its support for engineering research. This is designated the Brunel Fellowship and was introduced in 2006 to mark the 200th anniversary of the great Victorian engineer’s birth.

The Research Fellowship stipend payable in 2010 is £28,500 for the first year, and £30,000 for the second and third years. In addition a London (Overseas) Weighting of £2,500 per annum is payable in appropriate cases. Final year fellows are also sponsored to attend a Royal Society communication skills course. Stipends are reviewed annually.

A candidate must be a citizen of the United Kingdom or the Commonwealth, or of the Republics of Ireland or Pakistan. He or she should either have spent at least two out of the past three years at a UK Institution, or be intending to hold the Fellowship at a UK Institution, or both.

Applications are made online via this website (link below) and must include two references, plus certification from the institution at which the Fellowship is to be held. Applications must be received by 5pm Thursday 25 February 2010. Appointments to the Fellowship will be made during June 2010. Fellowships commence at the beginning of October in the year of award.

Please download the Full Regulations [pdf].

You can now apply for a Fellowship online.

Thought there might be a lot of King’s interest in this job.

£ 24,831 – 33,436
Full Time

West Midlands QI is a new service that has been established by NHS West Midlands in an ambitious response to the challenge of setting up a regional quality observatory as set out by Lord Darzi in his next stage review: ‘High Quality Care for All’.

Quality is at the heart of West Midlands QI. Its core purpose is to help understand quality and measure it – turning data into intelligence that will inspire clinical teams to seek improvements in the quality of services they offer

West Midlands QI is now seeking an outstanding analyst to become part of a small team that will deliver high quality information to clinical teams in the West Midlands.

• Are you motivated by achieving, empowering and informing?

• Do you have a strong track-record in clinical information analysis?

• Have you experience in developing and applying complex statistical methods to large datasets within complex computer software?

For further information about West Midlands QI, please visit www.wmqi.westmidlands.nhs.uk.

For an informal discussion regarding West Midlands QI please contact David Lane – Programme Coordinator on 0121 695 2580.
