Social media and your CV

October 13, 2009

Thought I would circulate this note from my colleague Hilary Moor.

“Interesting info from the AMBA event I attended last night, in which a senior headhunter and HR Director discussed student recruitment and concluded that managing your online profile is every bit as critical as a great CV if you’re trying to land a job.  Both these professional recruiters expressed concern (and amazement) that students seem largely unaware of the very real damage a questionable online presence can do to their career aspirations – cue 10 enthralling minutes of horror stories of offers lost and hearts broken.  Facebook photos, twitter comments, blogs and linked-in profiles are so easily searchable these days, and yes, employers really do do that kind of research on prospective employees.  The message to students?  Take responsibility for maintaining a professional online image: keep your status updates and twitter posts clean and for heaven’s sake get rid of those “interesting” photos from that hilaaaarious night out in the Student’s Union last year.”

For-warned is for-armed. Possibly more relevant if you are applying for the corporate world. Academia would not stoop that low, surely?
