‘How to Get Hired in Academia’ kicked off the Arts & Humanities Researchers’ Society 2012 monthly seminar series focusing on career progression and professional development. Over 60 students were present, wanting to hear tips on how to get a lectureship position. Professor Andy Pratt (CMCI) and Dr Alice Taylor (History) shared their knowledge and experience of the application and interview process. One of the most sought after attributes are publications, and not just any publications but peer-reviewed articles in highly regarded journals. Other key elements of getting hired include reputation, teaching experience, strong references (preferably from famous academics in the field), a covering letter that makes you stand out, and luck. As the standards are increasing, it is common for Arts & Humanities researchers to take up post-doctoral positions to boost their CV in order to attain the requirements necessary for a lecturing position.
The next Arts & Humanities Researchers’ Society event is ‘Alternative Careers to Academia’ on Tuesday 21st February 1-2pm in the Old Senior Common Room, Strand Campus.
