Science Placements

July 30, 2009

The ORBIS (Overcome Recession: Bioscience Investment in Skills) programme is seeking talented graduate, masters and postdoctoral level individuals to take up paid 26-week internship projects within leading bioscience and healthcare companies. As well as developing workplace skills within a hi-tech company environment, interns will also receive 12-days of bio-business training.

The ORBIS (Overcome Recession: Bioscience Investment in Skills) bio-business skills training programme sets out to respond to two distinct bioscience sector needs:

  • To provide affordable, relevant and responsive bio-business skills training to help companies tackle the current economic downturn more effectively.
  • To allow talented graduate-level interns to work within bioscience related companies on key projects, to increase company productivity, and to up-skill the interns.

Graduate-level bioscientists – specifically recent graduates with limited workplace experience or unemployed sector specialists – will benefit from paid internships with host companies from the bioscience sector. They will also receive a programme of high quality bio-business training. The training and workplace experience will allow graduates to develop new technical and commercial skills that will enhance their employment prospects and allow the sector as a whole to thrive.

There are 60 internship placements available.

The project will be delivered by The London BioScience Innovation Centre (LBIC) and The Royal Veterinary College (RVC). Project funding comes from the Economic Challenge Investment Fund (ECIF) managed by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). The programme will run from April 2009 to September 2010.

The closing date is Monday 2nd November 2009 but early applications are encouraged.

Commercial awareness

July 17, 2009

How does a PhD student demonstrate comercial awareness? Its an important question – but even if you stay in academe  you need to develop it – just ask your PI how much time s/he spends on seeking finance and managing budgets.

On recent visit to City Law firm Herbert Smith I came across a booklet with some excellent tips on this.

CA – what is it?

The ability to view situations from a business perspective. To step back and think: who are the key stakeholders in this situation. What would they be concerned about and what questions would they ask. Stakeholders could include customers / clients, employees, owners of companies, investors  -and the public.

How do you demonstrate it?

Work experience – a shop or service environment

Have you ever improved a current service or product? How did you go about it?

Roles: Did you have a key role in any society?

Have you ever raised money for charity, secured sponsorship for an event. What process did you go through to secure the funds?
