 Dr Leevers oversees the recruitment of  Postdoc scientists at London Research institute. She is going to talk about recruitment from a Cancer Research UK perspective, but the discussion will broaden out to starting a science career after your doctorate.

 It will be of interest to PhD students across the Health sciences, students at any stage of their doctorate (including  the early  months) and post-docs.

We are offering you the opportunity to attend the following lecture and workshop on publishing in the humanities and social sciences.  The lecture on academic publishing is open to all researchers and academic staff working in humanities and social science disciplines, followed by an intensive workshop for postgraduate research students ONLY who are in the later stages of their PhD. 

The lecture and workshop are being facilitated by Josie Dixon who has extensive experience working in academic publishing.  The workshop will help participants to understand the process of publishing, who the decision-makers are and what they are looking for and will be of particular interest to those researchers interested in publishing their PhD thesis as a book.

The History Lab is an established network for postgraduate students and new researchers in history and related disciplines.

History Lab has organised a ‘Viva Survivor’ workshop on Thursday 4 December, from 2pm – 4.30pm, at the Institute of Historical Research, Senate House. The workshop will be led by Professor Steve King (Oxford Brookes) and will provide tips and practical advice on how to get through the PhD viva process.

NUS research into student parents: online survey

We’d like to bring to your attention a major piece of research being carried out by National Union of Students into the experiences of parents studying in further and higher education.

The aim of the research is to shed light on the barriers faced by student parents, as well as to investigate the positive impact that learning can have on individuals and their families.

 

NUS is seeking further evidence of the issues facing student parents so that they can campaign for changes to improve their experience of education now and in the future.

Three-year Postdoc and PhD positions are available at the Open University from 1st February 2009.

“Secure Change: Security Engineering for lifelong Evolvable Systems” (click here).

Salary range is up to £33,780 per year (depending on qualifications and experience), plus resources for conference travel and equipment .

The aim in this project is to develop techniques and tools that ensure “lifelong” compliance to security, privacy and dependability requirements of long-running evolving software systems. The project will focus on mobile devices and homes, which offer both great research challenges and long-term business opportunities. The results will be continuously validated jointly with key industry players.

Applicants should have (or expect to have by the start of the project) a PhD in Computing or Mathematics, preferably with experience in one of Software Engineering, IT Security, or Formal Methods.

Each position will run for three years and includes no teaching obligations.
