ill1_67x67_tcm18-18753.jpgThursday and Friday 28th and 29th February from 10am to 5pm. Lab 1.26 on the 1st floor of New Hunt’s House on the Guy’s Campus.Run by Dr David Sugden.

A two-day, hands-on course on the use of real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to measure gene expression. Participants will learn about the theory of this increasingly important research method and have an opportunity to perform all of the practical steps involved.

qPCR is a very powerful, versatile and rapid method that has grown from promising technique used by ‘experts’ to a fully mature methodology available to scientists in many labs in many disciplines. It is a core analytical method now used in many areas of biological and health science research and in the pharmaceutical, food, biotechnology and clinical diagnostics industries. The remarkable range of applications of qPCR in a very wide range of medical and biological sciences will ensure that the postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers attending this workshop will gain significant transferable technical skills which will make an important contribution to enhancing their future employability.

This workshop is designed for research students and early career postdoctoral researchers who need practical training in the use of quantitative RT-PCR to measure gene expression levels. This is NOT an introductory course on PCR, and will be of most benefit to those who already have some prior knowledge of PCR.

To register for this workshop, please contact:  Maria.warling@kcl.ac.uk

img2391.jpgIn order to strengthen the research links that King’s has with other world-class Universities around the globe, the College has announced travel scholarships for any King’s PhD student who wishes to study at one of the agreed partner institutions.

    These currently include:

    University of Hong Kong

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

    National University of Singapore

The Scholarships are designed to allow our PhD students to spend time in another laboratory or to work closely with another research group or academic. It is expected that they will gain considerable research and career benefits from this opportunity.

Applications for funding can be made by individual PhD students, if these are supported by a Head of Department/Division. Applications should be made to the Research & Graduate School Support Section, 7.41 James Clerk Maxwell Building, Waterloo Campus (graduateschool@kcl.ac.uk), 020 7848 3376. Decisions on funding will be made on a two-month cycle starting with the first closing date for applications of 29 February 2008.

When deciding which  projects to fund, the selection team will take into account [a] the strategic value of the project in deepening the relationship between King’s and the relevant overseas partner, [b] the innovativeness of the research requiring the visit and the likely benefits for the advancement of the research career of the award winner and [c] subject to demand for funds, if projects are of equal merit, then a contribution from the department/division/school toward costs will be taken into account.

It is anticipated that applicants should be of at least 2nd year PhD level at the time they plan to stay in the partner institution.

The level of funding that will be awarded is designed to cover travel costs and make a contribution toward subsistence at the partner institution. It is anticipated that no award will be for more than £1,500. This funding is not available to support attendance at conferences.

The application form can be obtained by sending an email to graduateschool@kcl.ac.uk. The applicant should outline the advantages of the visit to the development of the link between King’s and the relevant key partner, as well as to the researcher(s), along with an outline of the proposed work schedule and how this visit will contribute to the broader research programme in which it would sit.

Successful candidates will be expected to submit a report on what they achieved during their visit.

How much time is required per week? Many of the projects can run independently, and may not need specific hours per week. If people have time they can dedicate to a certain project, we will usually communicate the project details, payments for the project, and deadline to submit the project. For people who prove to be productive and efficient, we can work out a set number of hours per week or month and pay them weekly/monthly.

The rate of pay depends on the project.

How is the pay paid as this is overseas work? With our contacts in the US and Australia, we have been wiring the money from our bank to theirs. This option has proved to be the simplest and most efficient.

How is the work assessed/monitored and transmitted? In most cases we communicate via emails, to send and receive project related work. In the event that people need to be in possession of books or other documents as hard copies, we FedEx these to them.

Work is assessed here by the Project Leader, or Director of English.
